Protecting our environment

The Waikato District Council (WDC) helps to preserve the district's environment alongside Environment Waikato. Measures the Council takes to preserve the environment include water conservation and management, rubbish collection services, and monitoring resource consents.

WDC protects the environment so the district is a safe, clean place to live and its natural resources will be maintained for future generations. 

What does WDC do to help preserve the environment?

  • The Council provides objectives, policies and rules that protect our environment through the District Plan
  • Liaises with Environment Waikato
  • Provides wastewater collection and disposal services in all towns
  • Promotes sustainable stormwater management on new developments
  • Monitors and controls water usage over the summer period
  • Issues resource and subdivision consents with conditions to protect the environment
  • Monitors resource consents to check conditions are been complied with
  • Follows up complaints about potentially un-consented activities or refers complainants to Environment Waikato if appropriate
  • Provides recycle / refuse transfer stations in Huntly, Raglan and Te Kauwhata
  • Provides rubbish collection services in most parts of the district including:
    • Domestic rubbish collections
    • Domestic recycling collections
    • Annual inorganic waste collections
  • Provides free disposal of domestic quantities of hazardous waste at refuse stations
  • Encourages Council staff to recycle and make Council offices more sustainable

 What you can do to help preserve our environment:

  • Recycle whenever you can
  • Purchase products with minimal or recyclable packaging
  • Conserve water, particularly when restrictions are imposed
  • Use energy efficient lighting and heating
  • Use a garden bag collection company, or compost, or worm farm kitchen and garden waste
  • Remove invasive or noxious weeds from your property to prevent them spreading
  • Talk to Waikato District Council staff before undertaking earthworks to see if consents are required (note that consents may be required from both the Waikato District Council and Environment Waikato)
  • Report activities where the environment is being placed at risk, for example, if you see organic waste or fill being dumped in Council reserves - please report this
  • Walk, bike, car pool or use public transport when possible
