As Raglan is an isolated community, it is important that members of the Raglan community learn how to manage an emergency situation using locally available resources. There are many organisations that can help you form a civil defence team, with information, checklists, and support.
Civil Defence in Raglan
We are currently looking for several members of the Raglan Community to become part of a civil defence team.
Civil Defence is:
- What we do at home to prepare
- The steps we put in place as a community
The Taranaki tornadoes and the Northland Floods are reminders of the power that nature has over us. This is dangerous for isolated communities such as Raglan, which have vulnerable resources and infrastructure such as roads and power supply.
How You Can Help
You can help the Raglan community by becoming part of a community civil defence team. With the right combination of public information and assistance, establishment and training of a core group of people, Raglan will be well placed to respond to an emergency situation.
It is important that Raglan prepares to manage an emergency using the resources that are available locally until external assistance arrives.
Raglan is fortunate to have full emergency services in the town and several doctors. There are also many other useful resources available, made up from various businesses in town.
The primary responders to an emergency will be the emergency services, but there are many other services and resources that may be donated, loaned or even co-opted if an emergency is declared.
We envisage that the key group of civil defence staff in Raglan will be a combination of people from:
- Emergency services
- Waikato District Council
- The community
These people will be chosen for their:
- Enthusiasm
- Ability
- And because they represent certain aspects or resources needed in an emergency
These key members will receive specialist training in how to manage an emergency and to link in with the district and regional operations centers.
With this specialist knowledge in place, they will gather information about the resources available in Raglan and how those resources can be applied to the emergency in the most efficient manner.
