Adopt a dog

The Waikato District Council Dog Pound in Ngaruawahia has dogs available for adoption to responsible new owners. When you adopt a dog, it will need to be registered and microchipped, and the Council prefers new dog owners to have their new dog desexed. See available dogs below.  Also, read futher below about re-homing dogs and viewing the dogs.

Re-homing dogs

All dogs need to be registered at full fee and microchipped before being re-homed. Preference will be given to new owners who choose to desex their new dog. This can be arranged at a reduced cost.

Dogs will generally not be re-homed to owners with an offending history, and no dogs classified as menacing, dangerous or with known aggressive behaviour will be considered for re-homing. However, often little is known about these dogs’ history and this must be taken into consideration if you are hoping to bring a dog into your home.

Information and advice on introducing a new dog to your home is available from our Animal Control Officers.  All dogs and puppies rehomed will be given a 3.6kg bag of Iams dog or puppy food to take home.  This is a premium dog kibble that we recommend, and which we feed in our dog pound.  Masterpet kindly donate this to all our dog adoptors.

Waikato District Council reserves the right to make a decision on the most suitable home for any dog available for adoption.  Dogs available for adoption can be viewed at the Waikato District Council's Dog Pound in Ngaruawahia by contacting a Animal Control Officer on 07 824 8633 or sending a request to public enquiries.

If we do not currently have available the type of dog you are interested in adopting, please see the Waikato SPCA and the Hamilton City Council, as they also have dogs available for adoption.

This page is updated regularly. However we can’t guarantee that all of the dogs featured here are still available. Please phone us on 07 824 8633 to check on the availability of any dog you have seen on this page.
