'Puketirini' new name for park

'Puketirini' new name for park

‘Solid Energy Weavers Park’ will now be known as ‘Puketirini’ following the release of the Puketirini Management Plan.

The Puketirini Management Plan, recently finalised by the Waikato District Council, sets out the future use, management and development of Puketirini, a Council owned park located in Huntly.

‘Puketirini’ is the original name of the area of land that the park is situated within. The name ‘Puketirini’ means ‘the hills and streams’, ‘Puke’ meaning ‘hills’ and ‘Tirini’ meaning ‘streams’.

Waikato District Council acquired Puketirini from Solid Energy in December 2006 under the Public Works Act 1981.

Puketirini is utilised by the public regularly for recreational activities, such as walking, running, and cycling. Puketirini also contains a lake which is used regularly for diver training and a number of community activities, including the recent North Waikato Steam & Heritage Festival.

Waikato District Council Group Manager, Community Assets, Richard Bax, said Council staff are also currently working on a proposal to recognise ‘Lake Puketirini’ as the official name of the lake.

A copy of the Puketirini Management Plan can be found on Council’s website www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz or copies are available at Council’s Huntly and Ngaruawahia offices.
