In 2006 the council acquired Puketirini. A significant feature of the park is Lake Puketirini, a newly formed lake that was once a coal pit. The lake has high water quality.
In 2009 the council completed a management plan for Puketirini in Huntly. The management plan provides objectives and policies regarding the future development, management and use of the park.
